An EA variable star, UCAC4 459-092739, was co-discovered, for the very first time in history, by six visually impaired students from the Canary Islands, Spain. These students have attended two workshops designed by The Astronomical and Educational Association of The Canary Islands "Henrietta Swan Leavitt" as an STEAM initiative. Carlos Morales-Socorro and Fransciso Jiménez-Alvarado, members of the AAEC Henrietta Swan Leavit (also AAVSO members), have been working on variable star workshops with public education students in the Canary Islands discovering 8 variable stars during the last 6 years. The key for this last workshop has been sonification, a technique which translates low values on a plot to low frequency sounds and high values on a plot to high frequency sounds. This way, the students may detect variable stars out of the noise by means of the sound. |
