The ASAS light curve at this position is actually for the brighter and redder star (J-K 0.90) 2MASS J17024526-3440590. Colors of this star are consistent with the K5II spectrum published in IBVS 3716. Maybe they took spectra of the wrong star?
The ~3 mag. change in one night suggests the UG nature might be okay and the blue object reported in 2001A&A...373..608D seems to support that. |

Symbiotic?
Spectral type not consistent with UG. However, the report of a change of ~3 mag. in one night (IBVS 3716) is doubtful.
J-K 0.68 is not particularly red and the same star appears in the Blue stellar candidates list in 2001A&A...373..608D with V= 15.94 and u-v= -0.39. |
